Novak Djokovic flaunts Covid guidelines to party with fans after surpassing Federer record


Novak Djokovic broke Roger Federers record for the most amount of weeks spent as the world No 1 and he celebrated by partying with fans in the streets of Belgrade. Djokovic ensured he sat at the top of the standings for a 311th week by winning the Australian Open title last month. . Djokovic battled through a painful muscle tear to claim the 18th Grand Slam title of his career in Melbourne. . . The 33-year-old is just two major tournament wins away from matching Federer and Rafael Nadal. . . But he has pulled away into a league of his own when it comes to weeks spent at the top of the tennis rankings. . . And Djokovic took to the streets in Belgrade to celebrate with his hardcore supporters. . . However, social distancing measures were flaunted as Serbian guidelines say outdoor gatherings should be limited to five people. . A physical distance of at least 1. 5m must be observed while face masks are mandatory indoors and outdoors when the area is crowded. . . Djokovic, who is an anti-vaxer, did wear a mask after getting out of his car and walking through the 100s of fans who lined the street. . . He then took to the stage and danced without his mask while music blared through large speakers. . . Djokovic proceeded to hand out posters to those in attendance from the temporary stage which had Novak written in blue neon lights on the top. . While addressing the crowd, Djokovic said. Today is a special day for myself, my family as well as Serbia. . . Thank you for the success which is not only mine but of the whole nation. . . Djokovic came under fire for organising the Adria Cup charity tournament last summer during the midst of the pandemic. . . A number of attendees, including tennis stars Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric and Djokovic, all tested positive for COVID-19 during the event. . Meanwhile, Djokovic has recently discussed his rivalry with Federer and Nadal, both of whom the Serbian is trying to chase down. . . Both of these guys have been my biggest rivals, Djokovic said. . . Nadal and I have played against each other more than any other two players in the history of sport. . . We have played I think 55 times, or maybe more Im not really sure. I have played Roger also nearly 50 times. . . I felt there was a rivalry and an intensity in the rivalry from the very beginning. Right from 15 years ago. For 15 years we have been pushing each other to the limit and making each other better.
